Music & Videos: Sixpense None The Richer Music

Sixpence None the Richer is a rock band known for its distinctive blend of indie-rock and introspective songwriting. Their live performances are filled with guitar riffs, driving bass, and pounding drums. As they embark on touring in 2024 and 2025, their first since 2013, lead singer Leigh Nash shares her excitement, saying, “I want to come out swinging.”
With a discography spanning six full-length albums and the newly released Rosemary Hill EP, Sixpence’s sound remains anchored in Nash’s unmistakable vocals and Matt Slocum’s intricate guitar work. The band is perhaps best known for their hit singles, including Kiss Me —which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a top-10 hit in sixteen countries—alongside There She Goes , Breathe Your Name , and Don’t Dream It’s Over.
Kiss Me continues to grow in popularity, recently surpassing one billion streams on Spotify—33% of those occurring in just the past year. The song frequently appears in Shazam’s weekly U.S. Top 200, goes viral on TikTok, and remains a staple in film, television, and advertising worldwide. In July 2024, Kiss Me was certified triple platinum by the RIAA, marking a remarkable resurgence; it went double platinum in 2023, following its initial platinum certification in 1999.
Sixpence None the Richer has earned two Grammy Award nominations, multiple Dove Awards, and accolades such as “Top Soundtrack Single” at the Billboard Music Awards and “Best Song” at the Young Hollywood Awards. Their rendition of There She Goes by The La’s was also recognized as a BMI Pop Awards Top Song in 2001.
Formed in 1992 by Slocum and Nash in New Braunfels, Texas, Sixpence None the Richer has released six LPs: The Fatherless and the Widow (1993), This Beautiful Mess (1995), Sixpence None the Richer (1997), Divine Discontent (2002), The Dawn of Grace (2008), and Lost in Transition (2012), along with two earlier EPs: Tickets for a Prayer Wheel (1995) and My Dear Machine (2008).
After reuniting in 2024, the band embarked on their first tour in nearly 20 years, performing in 50 cities across the U.S. and selling out iconic venues in Chicago, Nashville, New York, Washington, D.C., Santa Ana, West Hollywood, New Braunfels, Raleigh, and many more.
That same year, they released Rosemary Hill , their first new music since 2012. Paste Magazine praised the EP, writing, “Sixpence… are back and as catchy as ever. Rosemary Hill takes the band’s rock roots and pairs them with a bit of twangy, alt-tinged distortion.”
Slocum describes two of the EP’s six tracks as an homage to the band's hometown: “New Braunfels was an amazing place to grow up… We could roam freely in the streets, from sunup to sundown.” Nash adds, “Meeting Matt is the most important thing that happened for me in New Braunfels.” That sentiment rings true for the band as a whole—New Braunfels, Texas, is where Sixpence None the Richer was born.
Though the band has been based in Nashville for most of their career, Rosemary Hill highlights their deep Texas roots. The title track, named after the street where Slocum grew up, features Nash singing his lyrics:
"That was a long time ago
But the feelings, they don’t get old
Every time that I come home
I’ll be riding, I’ll be flying on Rosemary Hill—
My Rosemary Hill."
The EP was produced by longtime friend and collaborator Steve Hindalong of The Choir.
Reflecting on the band’s resurgence, Nash shares, “We’ve only gotten better—hopefully—at all of our crafts, our specific things that we do. So why would we stop? And that’s the encouragement… I like where I am right now, just as a human being, a mother, into my forties now. I like where I'm at. It’s weird. It’s kinda crazy. It’s a little off-balance, but it’s inspiring.”
Having once had a global No. 1 hit, Sixpence isn’t chasing fame or fortune, nor are they a nostalgia act. “We're not interested in just cashing in on the past,” says Nash. Slocum adds, “We’re trying to find the balance of experimenting and pushing our limits while still satisfying the people who have loved our music all these years. Basically, we want to keep making better records and writing better songs.”
Bassist Justin Cary describes the band as a family, with relationships between members taking priority. “We’re all more comfortable with each other now, just because we’ve lived through so much,” he says.
In Thread the Needle , Nash sings:
"Today I started wondering— How’d I get this far? Low down, tip of an iceberg— Still looking for stars."
Rosemary Hill is just the beginning of this new chapter. As Slocum puts it, “This definitely feels like act two; it’s a second wind.”
In April 2025, Sixpence None the Richer released their first-ever live album, Live at Gruene Hall , recorded at their sold-out hometown show at the legendary Gruene Hall—Texas’s oldest continuously operating dance hall.
For over three decades, Sixpence None the Richer has shaped the musical landscape across generations. With new music and a renewed creative drive, they continue to bring their songs—both old and new—to audiences worldwide.
